Special Guardianship Orders

In some cases, parents may find themselves unable to cope with the responsibilities of parenthood on their own.

In those circumstances a ‘special guardian’ can be appointed to look after the child.

The purpose of a special guardian is to offer long-term stability for the child in question, to share parental responsibility with the child’s parent and to take on the duty of making all day-to-day decisions relating to the child.

Supporting your Special Guardianship Application

If you wish to apply for a Special Guardianship Order to take on parental responsibilities for a child, you will need to give the local authority three months’ notice and be prepared to undergo an assessment to determine your suitability for the role. We will be able to offer legal advice on obtaining the order and the support plan, including financial support, from the local authority.
